Guest Blog: Safety and Security by Design

By Tom DiVito, Camlock Systems Inc Growing up you knew what bad guys looked like.  They wore masks and carried guns (think bank robbers or the Joker).  If you were designing something to keep them out you knew it was just a matter of stopping brute force.  Today the bad guys (and girls) are often the next door neighbor, the kid down the street, or some back room in Nigeria.   They don’t wear masks.  They do their craft in broad daylight. I recently attended a convention for hackers and lock pickers.  There were over 12,000 attendees.  The classes ranged from how to hack a Tesla, to how to hack your way out of detention.  A ballroom was filled with attendees learning how to pick locks and build bypass circuits.  There were contests and prizes.  Yup we live in a different world. I make locks for a living.  Some are high security.  Others can be opened by a six year old.  If you build cabinets or enclosures and you think your door is secure, let’s have a conversation.  Over 75% of the homes and small businesses in America can be opened by a handful of “master” keys you can get from the internet.  Picking locks is now a sport. I will be making a brief presentation on Friday afternoon Nov 18 titled Safety and Security by Design.  If you are responsible for the security of the product you design, build, or market, you should plan to attend.  This will be a quick education on locks and how easy they are to beat and what your exposure is if someone gets in.  How strong is your brand and insurance from terrorists, competitors, or just stupid kids?  I am on third in the Friday Job Shop class F96: Safety Strategies for Fabricators, 1:30PM to 3:30PM.
