Is 3-D Printing the Way of the Future in Manufacturing?

Here at FABTECH, we’re always reading about the future of the manufacturing sector, following the latest trends and anticipating the next horizon. So we were very interested in a recent Forbes article in which Bob McCutcheon, US Industrial Products Leader at Price Waterhouse Cooper, told reporter Rakesh Sharma that 3-D printing could be what reshapes manufacturing in America. According to Sharma, “3D printing can be used to supply highly customized products on demand to local geographies”. However, it could be a while before the technology spurs the industry. The findings of the Price Waterhouse Cooper report reveal that only 35 percent of the companies surveyed are using the technology for prototyping or production, and those who are only use it for low-volume projects. The other problem, according to the article, is the lack of talent, as 3-D printing is such a new concept for workers in the industry. However, McCutcheon says that many companies are experimenting and adopting training programs so that 3-D printing could become a reality in the future. “The technology is already capable of producing high quality products,” says McCutcheon. “The value (that it unlocks) in manufacturing can lead to development of new products and services.” FABTECH knows that 3-D printing is on the wave of the future and part of the revitalization of American manufacturing.  With that in mind, 3-D printing is part of the plan for this year’s show.  You’ll see exhibitors with 3-D printing technology among the 1,400 exhibiting companies all under one roof in Atlanta, GA on November 11-13.
