Federal Agency Regulations Pose Challenges for Small Manufacturers

The US has a strong and proud reputation as a nation of innovators and producers. Despite fluctuating growth numbers, polls show that Americans still believe the manufacturing industry is incredibly important to maintain a strong national economy. But manufacturers – especially small manufacturers – face a number of challenges that threaten to hold back growth.  One pressing issue is compliance with mounting federal regulations. Data show that regulatory compliance efforts cost American business over $2.2 trillion per year.  Put that number into context by considering that, in 2014 alone, federal regulatory bodies issued 3,541 final regulations and proposed 2,375 more. Wrapped up in red tape, some manufacturers are taking their fight to the public and even to Washington.  On Wednesday for example, the US House of Representatives Committee on Small Business held a hearing titled, “Tangled in Red Tape: New Challenges for Small Manufacturers.”  Committee members heard testimony from representatives of small manufacturing companies about several specific regulations that unnecessarily diminish efficiency and add cost.  Committee Chairman Steve Chabot pointed out in his opening statement that regulation can be valuable for enhancing safety and for other important purposes, but it can also needlessly slow production and harm competitiveness.  He said, “I’m not against all federal regulations; I’m against dumb federal regulations.” Addressing problems from excessively burdensome government regulation to a widening skills gap is part of an overall strategy to allow US manufacturers to grow and compete in the global marketplace.  At FABTECH, we bring leading industry minds and voices together to address some of the biggest issues facing our sector.  You can expect panel discussions, education sessions and keynote remarks that touch on these and other topics in Chicago on November 9-12, 2015.  Learn more.
