Finding Your Leadership Style to Lead a Performance Based Organization

leadership
What is your leadership style?  That is a question that is often asked by employees of a manager or of prospective new employees during a job interview.   It has always fascinated me as to what type of answer is expected.  Would respondents say their style is dictatorial or over bearing?  The odds are that these types of responses probably will not take the leader far in terms of effectiveness or with employees following this person.   How about the response being that the person has an inspirational or logical style of leadership.  What do those terms really mean?  What type of leaders are companies looking for?  These are questions requiring long discussions and analysis – far too long for this blog. Leadership development has been studied since Lao Zhu, a 571 B.C. Chinese philosopher.    Zhu is credited as being the first person in history to begin discussing the need for formal and effective leadership in organizations.  And since that time, there have been countless studies, articles and college courses discussing the need for people to develop their own personal leadership style.  While there is nothing wrong with discussing different styles of leadership, attaching a leadership style to an individual does a disservice to the leaders and the people they lead.  What if a person is a “collaborative” leader, but a situation requires direct intervention?  Can the leader transition to being more direct and aggressive when needed?  If the leader’s behavior changes, how is that received and perceived by peers, employees and senior leaders. Successful leaders, do not allow themselves to be pigeon-holed into any one specific type of management style.  Rather, effective leaders learn to recognize that in different organizational situations the style of leadership may need to change to be successful. As part of my talk at FABTECH 2016 in Las Vegas on Wednesday, November 16, I will be discussing what defines a performance-based organization and how to improve accountability and responsibility.  And with a focus on improving performance, participants will also learn that in having a personal leadership style, how to incorporate  becoming  a situational leader for both personal and organizational success. Learn more here. I look forward to seeing you at FABTECH 2016. [x_author title=”About the Author”]
