Women Critical Component to Fill Manufacturing Skills Gap

FABTECH women
Women in manufacturing? Not a new concept but one that maybe missed by many when looking to fill the current skills gap. Women represent manufacturing’s largest pool of untapped talent and are a critical component to helping fill this gap. Studies show that companies that achieve diversity in their management and on their corporate boards attain better financial results, on average, than other companies. And according to a Women in Manufacturing (WiM) survey, more than 80% of women who do work in the manufacturing industry find their jobs interesting and challenging. Talent development efforts such as increasing STEM education for women, combined with organizations such as WiM and industry events such as FABTECH that support, promote and inspire women who have chosen a career in manufacturing are important. At the same time, increasing the presence of women in manufacturing helps to create the “push-pull” effort needed to build supply and demand. Together it’s a win-win situation for the industry. FABTECH  is pleased to host a Women of FABTECH Breakfast with Tech Tour at this year’s Chicago show to support the industry-wide effort to highlight the many exciting and rewarding career opportunities available in manufacturing today. Hear keynote speaker Karen Kerr, Director for Advanced Manufacturing, GE Ventures, participate in a technical tour on the show floor and take advantage of the opportunity to meet other women leaders in the manufacturing sector. Those interested can go to fabtechexpo.com to register for the show, breakfast and more. WiM is a national organization dedicated to supporting, promoting, and inspiring women who have chosen a career in the manufacturing industry.  WiM’s more than 500 members gather at events throughout the year to share perspectives, gain cutting-edge industry information, improve leadership and communication skills, participate in mentoring and sponsoring programs, and network with industry peers. You can learn more about WiM at www.womeninmanufacturing.org or by following them on Twitter (@WomeninMfg) and on Facebook (www.facebook.com/womeninmfg).
